5 Steps to Fresher Coffee

1 – Buy coffee directly from a coffee roaster

Convenience has robbed coffee drinkers entirely. A lot of people buy their coffee for the month from grocery stores because it is convenient. While there is nothing wrong with that, you just will not be able to enjoy fresh coffee. Coffee is good but fresh coffee is great! Most coffee brands and Sarasota coffee roasters that sell in a grocery store setting will not be able to deliver the Banyan Coffee Company freshness promise. That is because of the shelf life. Stores will make a purchase from coffee roasters and the product can sit around for weeks. However, it is not the Sarasota coffee roasters fault. The breakdown happens in between the distribution of the coffee and getting it to the customer’s home. At that point, consider the coffee stale. What is the difference between drinking your average coffee brand and a Bradenton coffee specialty that is single origin coffee? What is the solution for those of us who LOVE fresh coffee?? Skip the middleman and buy local, Bradenton coffee today!

“Banyan Coffee delivers to your front door in the Sarasota/Bradenton area. This stuff was roasted today! Support a local business next time you need to get coffee!”
JEREMY, SARASOTA – 4/3/20

When we roast our coffee, we treat it like a hot potato. Our mission is simple: import our Sarasota coffee, roast it, then deliver the single origin coffee to our clients and customers within 48 hours. A lot of times, roasting and delivery happens on the same day. Treating our coffee roasting process like a hot potato helps you get fresh coffee quicker and less time sitting in someone else’s hand. No need to go to the grocery store any longer! We try to personalize every roast for each customer because coffee is very personal to each Sarasota coffee shop, business, restaurant, church, and the individual customers. Our coffee is roasted on demand and not in bulk. That is because we do not want excessive coffee sitting and getting stale.

We always ask customers at the Bradenton and Sarasota farmers market what they normally drink. Light, medium, dark roast? Colombia, Congo, Peru, Guatemala, Ethiopia? There are many different regions to import coffee from and ways to roast it to accommodate your preference. At Banyan Coffee Company, we are here for YOU, and want to make sure you are happy with your coffee. We love talking to our clients and customers throughout the week and updating their roast.

2 – Skip the ground coffee and buy whole beans

Buying whole coffee beans is crucial to make sure your coffee stays fresher for longer periods of time. When coffee drinkers buy their beans pre-ground in bags and containers, the coffee begins breaking down immediately. However, buying coffee beans whole, and grinding them just before drinking it allows for a smoother, fresher coffee that will get your day started right! Pre-ground beans that sit around for a while creates more surface area for the coffee to be exposed to its environments. By keeping it in a whole bean until the drinking process, you will have a smooth coffee every time.

Grinding coffee opens it to oxygen degasses, releasing the gases built up in the roasting process. This is a good thing but does not need to happen until you are ready to drink it. However, if it is ground, the longer it will degass, causing the coffee to lose more flavor and aroma, creating a flat brew that tastes stale. Not to mention, ground coffee is at an increased risk of being exposed to moisture. When roasted coffee gets moist, the oils in the coffee that give it flavor do not taste as good. What is our advice? Buy whole bean coffee and grind it just before consuming it to prolong aroma and acidity, ensure freshness and maximize flavor.

3 – Buy a grinder

Whole bean coffee is a must for freshness. At Banyan Coffee, we understand some java drinkers do not want to grind whole coffee beans. We will never judge you for that. We can grind your coffee for you and still deliver it (sighs). It will still be fresher than the coffee sitting on the shelves at the grocery stores. In many cases with food and beverages, air is our enemy. Once you grind the beans, their protective shell is gone. The breakdown of the coffee accelerates exponentially once grounded. We recommend grinding the day you are brewing that particular cup of coffee.

You can buy a coffee grinder online for home between $10 – $15. It does not have to be an expensive grinder. Some of our customers do not like the sound grinders make early in the morning. For those of you who are in the same boat or do not want to wake your entire house and dog up, hand coffee grinders for manually grinding is the solution. We suggest looking around and seeing what Prima Coffee Equipment has available. If you are looking for an automatic grinder, we suggest purchasing a burr grinder instead of a blade grinder. The blade grinder can heat up the beans and create inconsistency in grounds. Burr grinders are more consistent. Baratza encore is a great grinder at the top end of your budget but Hario hand grinders are less expensive that will fit anyone’s budget.

4 – Storing your coffee beans

This is one of the most important steps for prolonging the life and freshness of your favorite sarasota roasted coffee beans. How do I store my coffee beans? We get this question all the time at Bradenton’s farmers market. Here is our best answer to that question: keep the temperature where your beans are sitting set to your preferred indoor temperature. Your coffee is happy where you are happy.

Oftentimes people buy fancy storage containers to store their freshly roasted Sarasota coffee but using Banyan Coffee Company’s bag that we deliver our single origin coffee is the best method of storing freshly roasted coffee. Our bags are equipped in accordance with the specialty coffee industry standard by using a one-way valve to only let air out but not let air in. We know mason jars are cool and trendy but they are not able to protect the Bradenton coffee against sunlight. Sunlight speeds up the breakdown process of whole coffee beans, which means your coffee can go stale sooner. Best coffee storing practices are to leave the beans in the bags we deliver them in, keep the bag in a cool, dry, and darker place without humidity, preferably a cabinet or pantry.

Bought too much coffee? Freezing freshly roasted coffee is skeptical within the specialty coffee community, though it does slow the oxidation rate, preventing stale coffee for the long haul. Next time you buy our coffee online or in one of our Bradenton/Sarasota locations, grab an extra bag and store it in the freezer for a month or so. Then give it a try and let be the judge of it for yourself!

5 – Plan to consume coffee within 2 to 4 weeks

Even though coffee is safe to drink several months after roasted, it will lose its natural flavor notes (chocolate, caramel, strawberry etc.) Several coffee roasters will add in artificial flavoring to help promote flavor to offset the shelf life at grocery stores. At Banyan Coffee company we encourage our family, friends, clients, and customers to plan to consume their Sarasota roasted coffee within 2 weeks. What’s Banyan Coffee Company’s solution?

Banyan Coffee subscription box! It helps with convenience and freshness. Coffee subscriptions work well because they automatically show up at your door either bi-weekly or monthly, depending on your coffee consumption. It is also another great way to try out different coffees from various regions and different roasts. You can also add in our very own specialty Banyan Coffee Company Cold Brew! With every purchase, our team stamps a roast date on the bag so you can track the quality, life, and freshness of Sarasota’s finest coffee beans! Within the specialty coffee community, anything roasted past 2 weeks is considered old and stale. Everyday you open a Banyan Coffee Company bag, not only do you get an exquisitely satisfying whiff of the aroma that only comes from fresh coffee, you are reminded of when those beans were roasted.

We do our absolute best to ensure the freshest coffee by delivering or shipping coffee to your doorstep within 24 hours of being roasted. Great coffee should be looked at like a loaf of bread. Once the bread is baked, each day it will become more and more stale. Drink your coffee as close to the roast date as possible by only ordering enough for two weeks. You would not eat a loaf of bread a month after buying it (we hope not).
